Signs of a flea infestation

A Flea problem can be difficult to spot. Fleas can be found mostly where pets rest and within their fur. However, they can lay eggs in carpets and other areas of the home, being able to live without a host for months. So what are the signs of a flea infestation and how can they be identified in your home?

Have you been bitten?

Fleas will tend to bite mainly on the arms and the legs rather than across the core. The irritation of the bite is mainly caused through the reaction to saliva from the fleas that is injected into the skin of the host to prevent the blood from clotting whilst the flea feeds.

Evidence?

You may be able to see visible droppings and markings around the home, particularly around the edges of the rooms. Fleas, although small, can also be seen by the naked eye, particularly when jumping to or from a host.

Pet contact

If you have had friends and their pets in your home or if you pet has had contact with others, it only takes one flea to spread throughout the house. They can lay eggs in the carpets and remain dormant for long periods of time before finding a host to feed on.

Pre-flea treatment solutions

Flea infestations need to be attacked from a variety of angles for the flea eradication to properly begin. There are a few things that you will need to do before flea treatment is carried out, to ensure that your problem is dealt with quickly and effectively.

Strip the beds and boil wash the bedding at the highest wash possible (preferably 90 degrees), which will kill off any eggs. Soft furnishings, including any toys and clothes being stored, should be tumble dried or washed at the highest possible temperature.

Make sure pets are treated before and after treatment is carried out, to ensure an infestation does not return. Your local vet surgery will be able to advise you on the best course of action to take. If the pet is not treated, the flea problem will simply return the treatment process will need to be repeated again.

All floors either hard or carpeted should be vacuumed and cleaned, paying particular attention to the outer edges of the room. The use of a hoover may help to physically remove all stages of a flea’s lifecycle from the carpets and furniture. The contents of the hoover must be disposed of quickly and carefully.

Tapeworms can be spread to your pet if a flea that is carrying tapeworm eggs is eaten. The tapeworm eggs will then hatch and attach itself to your pet’s intestines, resulting in great irritation, vomiting and weight loss.

Cat scratch disease (CSD)

Owners can be at risk from this type of disease, as fleas transmit CSD from one cat to another. Humans can get CSD when infected flea faeces is transmitted from the pet to owner through a bite, lick or scratch.
